ESSS Space Training at Hawassa University

In a significant event marking the culmination of 2023’s Space Training, over 700 enthusiastic students from Hawassa University engaged in a comprehensive space science training program conducted by the Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS). Running from December 26 to 28, 2023, this collaborative effort between ESSS and the College of Natural and Computational Sciences at Hawassa University represented a notable step in nurturing Ethiopia’s aspiring space professionals.

Mr. Biruk Terefe, Managing Director, ESSS

The training program covered essential subjects, for students with diverse academic backgrounds. It included basic to advanced astronomy topics in the light of addressing all topics optimally. The training included a Space Engineering Session, focusing on Satellite Communication and Orbital Mechanics, along with Aerospace Engineering, exploring core principles in aeronautical and astronautical engineering. Additionally, trainees received foundational insights into Pho-tonics.

Beyond the immersive science session, participants were also offered insights into broader educational opportunities. Former ESSS volunteer, Intern, and Current Erasmus Mundus Scholar, Ms. Meron Demissie, delivered an informative session on the Erasmus Mundus Programme, a prestigious initiative promoting international academic exchange. This presentation provided students with valuable information about pursuing further studies abroad, potentially fostering connections between Ethiopian space science aspirants and the global academic community. The session served as a valuable complement to the technical focus of the program, demonstrating the diverse pathways available to those passionate about space exploration.

Apart from theoretical learning, the program featured two sun-gazing sessions allowing participants to observe sunspots directly. This practical application complemented topics covered in the astronomy session, enabling students to visualize and better understand what they have learned in the training.

The successful completion of this training program underscores the fruitful partnership between ESSS and Hawassa University, preparing a skilled group of students versed in space science and related technologies.

Established in 2004, ESSS has been dedicated to fostering a scientific culture in Ethiopia and harnessing advancements in space science and engineering for national development. This training initiative epitomizes the society’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of Ethiopian space professionals, in line with the country’s aspirations in this dynamic field.

As ESSS commemorates its 20th year in 2024, this milestone marks two decades of unwavering commitment to advancing space education, research, and innovation within Ethiopia, guiding the country’s path in the intriguing domain of space science.
